Warhammer 40K rpg

(WH40K) I just bought it on a whim, the captain contract subliminal's are calling me again.

Any thoughts?

(PS: It's the inquisitor version not the rogue trader.)

Despite the fact that the game characters are limited to the options presented (which are nowhere near as flexible as WFRP1e or 2e), the game is actually quite nice.

Mechanically, it is the WFRP2e engine with a new background tacked over the top. The basic premise is that characters are members of an inquisitor's retinue, doing the dirty jobs for their master. While this may sound limiting, it is quite easy to discard this and try running something different in the W40K universe. Ideas that have crossed my mind included hive gangs or Adeptus Mechanicus conspirators.

The real problem I have had is trying not to buy the supplements. I've managed to avoid buying the adventures, but the rest of the books add very nicely to the background. I have also submitted to Rogue Trader and will probably be buying Deathwatch as well.

And I gave up on W40K after the original Rogue Trader ...

I still have all my old compendium and realms of chaos books, including squat rules and the first iterations of the tyranids.

There's so much WH40k spam on amazon Im sure they'll be plenty second hand on ebay.

Incidentally one of my earliest proper sci-fi game was a MERP conversion, trying to play as WH 40K. It didn't work out to well though, I was only 14 at the time ^^/. It did inspire my friend to do his own version set in a post apocalyptic earth which we played for a good ten years or so. Good times.

Back to 40K rpg , so its like the career template idea with the "classic" warhammer stats on top. You know in WHFRP you had like the 4 main classes then you picked you career, like rat catcher and such nonsense.

Something like that. Except you can only have one career - once a Guardsman, always a Guardsman. However, you can go a long way in that career. There are something like 8 to 10 levels in a Dark Heresy career, with each level giving more options, and maybe some sidepaths as well.

Nothing like the same variety as WFRP, but more depth.

I put this in the wrong section. I just noticed that.

Anyway Warhammer 40K, just got it.

Had a quick read through.

Wow, they don't half love their tables and charts I'm guessing someone just got a Maths degree and was itching to try it out. There is literally a table on every page, well maybe not, but it seems that way :D

There is also some very dense background text, in difficult-to-read script.

Indeed, I got eye strain from those, when I read two I realized its stuff been covered is already in the other WH40K material. That should save me an eye transplant in later years.
